‘Sherlock rose and lit his pipe. ‘No doubt you think you are complimenting me in comparing me to Dupin, he observed ‘Now in my opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow. That trick of his of breaking in on his friends’ thoughts with an apropos remark after a quarter of an hour’s silence is really very showy and superficial. He had some analytical genius, no doubt; but he was by no means such a phenomenon as Poe appeared to imagine.’
“Edgar Allan Poe, who, in his carelessly prodigal fashion, threw out the seeds from which so many of our present forms of literature have sprung, was the father of the detective tale, and covered its limits so completely that I fail to see how his followers can find any fresh ground which they can confidently call their own. “
இதை “covered its limits so completely” என்று டோயல் சொல்வதின் மூலம் புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம்.
“The Murders in the Rue Morgue“ல் கதைசொல்லியும் / டுபானும் ஓர் இரவு, நகர வீதிகளில் வலம் வருகின்றனர். 10-15 நிமிடங்கள் பேசிக்கொள்ளாமல் நடந்த நிலையில், கதைசொல்லி அந்தக் கணம் மனதில் நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்ததை டுபான் சரியாகக் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.
‘Now, brought to this conclusion in so unequivocal a manner as we are, it is not our part, as reasoners, to reject it on account of apparent impossibilities. It is only left for us to prove that these apparent ‘impossibilities’ are, in reality, not such.’ (“The Murders in the Rue Morgue”)
‘How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?’ (-The Sign of Four)
“The Murders in the Rue Morgue”/ ‘A Study in Scarlet‘ இரண்டின் முடிவையும் பார்ப்போம்.
‘The Purloined Letter‘/ ‘A Scandal in Bohemia‘ கதைகளில் சில விடைகள் கிடைக்கின்றன.
“Where does a wise man hide a pebble?” என்று G.K. Chestertonன் ‘The Sign of the Broken Sword‘ (1911ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்தது) கதையில் வரும் கூற்றையும், அவரின் ‘The Invisible Man‘ கதையையும் இந்த இரு கதைகளோடு ஒப்பிட்டுப் பார்த்தால், இவற்றிலும் ஒத்த கூறுகளைக் காணலாம்.
“It was a freak of fancy in my friend (for what else shall I call it?) to be enamored of the Night for her own sake; and into this bizarrerie, as into all his others, I quietly fell; giving myself up to his wild whims with a perfect abandon. The sable divinity would not herself dwell with us always; but we could counterfeit her presence. At the first dawn of the morning we closed all the messy shutters of our old building; lighting a couple of tapers which, strongly perfumed, threw out only the ghastliest and feeblest of rays. By the aid of these we then busied our souls in dreams –reading, writing, or conversing, until warned by the clock of the advent of the true Darkness.”
‘The Hound of the Baskervilles‘ நாவல், “The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot”,”The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane” சிறுகதைகளில் அமானுஷ்ய/ bizarre செயல்கள் இருந்தாலும் இவை வாசகனுள் குறுகுறுப்புடன் கூடிய பரபரப்பை உண்டாக்குகின்றனவே தவிர இவற்றை இருண்மை /ஹாரர் அம்சங்கள் கொண்டவை என்று சொல்ல முடியாது.
‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue‘ கதையில் பாரிஸ் நகரின் மாலை/ இரவு நேரக் காட்சிகள் மற்றும் அதன் தெருக்களின் வர்ணனைகள் இருந்தாலும், அந்நகரம் கதைகளிடமிருந்து பிரிக்கமுடியாத அளவிற்கு ஒன்றவில்லை.
‘The Hound of the Baskervilles‘ல் அமானுஷ்ய சூழலை உருவாக்குவதில் (வாசகனுக்கு உண்மை தெரிவதற்கு முன்னால்) மக்கள் அஞ்சும் பயங்கர மிருகத்திற்கு மட்டுமின்றி, முக்கியப் பாத்திரம் வசிக்கும் ‘Baskerville Hall‘, அதன் அருகில் உள்ள moorன் வெறுமையான பெரும்பரப்பு, அதில் ஒளிந்திருக்கும் ஆபத்துக்கள் இவற்றுக்கும் பங்கு உள்ளது.
“…On this narrow path the writer must walk, and he sees the footmarks of Poe always in front of him. He is happy if he ever finds the means of breaking away and striking out on some little side-track of his own.”

Stuart Macbride -

அப்போது அவர்களில் ஒருவர் “Must’ve been OK though: I’m no’ feeling all Hannibal Lectery “.

Black Seconds - Karin Fossum

Early on in Karin Fossum's 'Black Seconds', when her daughter Ida has not come back home long after going to purchase some comics, Helga starts getting nervous but also thinks "... Why did this feel so familiar? Because she had already, for many years now, been rehearsing this moment in her mind...". This insight into the mind of not just Helga but any parents whose child is young, the fear that your child cannot take care of him/herself, the fear that she may get lost/hurt and sets the tone for this compelling and moving novel.

When 11 year old Ida  goes missing, Inspector Sejer starts searching for her. Search parties are mounted, but to no avail. There are 2 other parallel threads, one concerning 'Emil' a curious character, who doesn't speak and generally shuns/is shunned by there and the other concerning, 'Tomme', the nephew of Helga. We see the lives of Tomme unraveling, witnessed with a sense of impending doom by Ruth his mother (and Helga's sister) and also 'Emil' whose isolated existence is also being threatened. Does any of these have any relation to Ida going missing or are these just red herrings? Though Fossum doesn't give out anything one way or the other, one can guess the perpetrator some way into the novel, though it doesn't have any major impact on your reading experience, because this is majorly a novel that deals with the fear/foreboding of loss , the actual pain that strikes you when your worst nightmare comes true, the ways in which people deal with it/try to come to turns with it and which incidentally also happens to be crime fiction. Sample this. As Helga becomes more and more frantic when Ida does not return, she decides to call the police and thinks that if she does it, Ida will come back, because then it would mean that Helga had overreacted and she is willing to be the target of derision from others, if it would mean that Ida will come back. We, the reader, looking from outside, know that Ida is not coming, are aware that these things very rarely end up being good, but the capacity of the human mind to create scenarios to avoid facing painful situations/to create happy resolutions, however unrealistic the scenarios may be, how much ever they fly in the face of reality (even Helga would be aware of this, but her love doesn't let her face it) the pathos of the whole thing, still moves us.

The perpetrator is also one of us, he is not your standard cunning, scheming criminal master mind, but someone who makes a mistake without meaning to, is afraid to own up to it, puts on a face of deception, but to no avail because his initial mistake/deception in turns becomes a vicious circle of more mistakes and more deception, always pulling him deeper into the quagmire from which there is no escape. Towards the end, after he has been apprehended  ".. He got through his day one second at a time. He often tried to daydream, tried to nibble his way through this mountain of time that lay before him...". Yes, a mountain of time to get through, not just for him, not just for  Helga, but also for the families of everyone directly impacted by the events of the novel.  Fossum again succeeds in making us adjust our perceptions of crime, its consequences and empathize with everyone involved in this sad business, without compromising much on the core tenets of crime fiction,  reinforcing once again she remains a cut above the majority of crime writers and is one of the very best in the business.

Standing In Another Man’s Grave-

இப்படி அவர் செய்யக் காரணம் “.. just to be annoying”.
இதையும் ரீபஸின் மறுவருகை குறித்த வாசக எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் இணைத்துப் பார்க்கலாம்) அந்த விதத்தில் ரீபஸுடனான மிகவும் மன நிறைவான சந்திப்பாக ‘Standing in Another Man’s Grave‘ உள்ளது.

The Retribution - Val Mcdermid

Jacko Vance, who has been haunting Toni Hill even though he has been behind bars for years is planning his escape as 'The Retribution' begins.

Jacko escapes, Jacko does several shockingly evil things, the novel ends, that's it. Mcdermid's novels have been of a consistently high quality, with well fleshed out characters,  tightly built events, a slow build up to a explosive climax. But in this novel, Mcdermid seems to let it run all over the place, the apparent ease in which Jacko does what he does is as shocking if not more than what he actually does. The novel reads more like a generic, mindless slasher novel than the closely knit dark/brooding ones we associate with her.

The unspoken things between Tony and Carol is one of the main USP's of this series, but Mcdermid is treading the line where it can become a case of flogging a horse to its death. All this, 'will they/wont they' speculation could lead to reader exhaustion beyond a point. Flashes of the Mcdermid that we know are there, a couple of events that remind us that Mcdermid doesn't play to the gallery, doesn't shy away from things that can unsettle the reader and that this novel is just an aberration in an otherwise high quality series.

Sun and Shadow - Ake Edwardson

A policeman with relationship problems? No. Does he have a drinking problem? No. Any existential crisis? Not really, unless you consider the adjustment period when two people decide to get together to be a existential or relationship crisis. Ake Edwardson's ErikWinter does not check many of the standard tropes of the main protagonist of a police procedural and that itself is a refreshing change and gives him a head start over his other contemporaries who are busy solving crimes. Oh yes, there are references to the type of music that Erik likes and so it is not as if Edwardson is striving to make Erik completely different from other fictional policemen.

'Sun and Shadow' sees Erik Winter getting ready for his girlfriend to move in with him. He is also awaiting their first child. He has to juggle changes to his personal life with a series of murders of couples who don't seem to have been related to each other in any way.  Edwardson takes his time setting up the story which is interleaved with Erik's personal life, his professional interactions. The motive for the crimes is hinted at the very beginning and can be guessed quite easily. It is also clear by the middle of the novel that the case is going to hit close to home for Erik. Edwardson though, throws up a unexpected twist at the end regarding the identity of the perpetrator.  The ending too is totally 'Scandinavian' in the sense that there are no bangs or frills, just a seriously dangerous situation handled in a matter of fact manner.

Edwardson has a narrative style which is not loud or too violent, which makes even the more violent crimes a bit more palatable. You don't get the feeling of being rushed headlong towards the end, it is a more logical progression of being carried by the natural flow of investigation towards it. Edwardson nearly loses it though while going into great detail about sub-plot concerning Winter's parents. I get that Edwardson is trying to create a specific universe for Winter so that he feels more real and the reader more close to him, but the digression becomes too long, (nearly 1/4th of a 400 plus page novel) where the rewards do not match the effort put in it. Having read his 'Frozen Tracks', it seems that these digressions are a pattern with him, where he nearly loses track of the main story line. Notwithstanding these digressions, and if you dig the placidity (which as mentioned earlier is very natural) of the narrative this is a series worth your time.

The Last Temptation - Val Mcdermid

It is interesting to see how a series of novels (in any genre) develops over the course of time. The quality of the series (which is subjective) is one thing, other things that are of interest include the themes/canvas/setting that the author chooses over the course of the series and any change in them. Some authors seem to be clear right from the beginning about how the series is going to go. For instance, right from 'Faceless Killers', once can sense/see the themes that Mankell would expand upon in his next works. 'Sjöwall and Wahlöö apparently had a plan for 10 books alone, right from the beginning. Some authors are different, it does take time for them to find their voice, like Rankin for instance. The initial novels of Rebus series like 'Tooth & Nail', 'Hide & Seek' etc could be termed as slasher novels. They were good yes, but it is with novels like 'Black Book', 'Black & blue' that you see Rankin finding his feet and his preferred zone of writing.

Similar is the case of 'Val Mcdermid's Tony Hill. Yes, the series made a splash right from the beginning with the unique protagonist 'Tony Hill' , which was in a way, the emasculation of the dominant masculinity of crime fiction. So, you had a unique main character and  antagonists whose evil shocked many, but they still remain dangerously close to slasher novels. The third novel in the series 'The Last Temptation' falls in this category. The interplay between characters, the well-drawn story lines of the earlier series are missing in them.

'The Last Temptation' sees Carol Jordan going undercover in Europe to nail a gangster. (Too?) coincidentally, Tony too lands up in Europe as part of an investigation into the serial killing of psychologists. The two strands proceed in parallel and result in a gory end. The killing of the psychologists is gory, but not well thought out with the main intention being to shock the reader. Carol's thread had a lot of potential, which the latter day Val Mcdermid would surely have fleshed out well, the dynamics between Carol and the Gangster, the blurring of the lines between reality and the part one is playing etc, but as such what we get are the flashes of potential that we see to fruition in the later novels, but which remain underdeveloped here ultimately. Even the intentions of the serial killer has potential with the weight of history lending credence to it. But here again, it remains an interesting idea that didn't achieve it's full potential. Mcdermid takes the easy way out in the convergence of the 2 threads towards the end. The revelation about an event which helped Carol to enter the gangster's world is totally incredulous. One actually guesses it beforehand, but still holds hope that Mcdermid would never go for such a far-fetched scenario, and hence is disappointed when our guess turns out to be correct. One thing is consistent though. Right from the first book, Mcdermid has never been squeamish about blood and gore, (at the same time avoiding gratuitous violence) and putting her characters in difficult places, both emotionally and physically.

As a crime fiction novel, it is middling at best. But  since it tells us why the Tony-Carol relationship is the way it is in the later novels, it is important in that sense and hence is a must read if you are a follower of this series.

Broken Skin - Stuart Macbride

In Stuart Macbride's 'Broken Skin', DS Logan McRae  gets thrashed by a young kid on one occasion. While the image of a grown up eating humble pie at the hands of a kid is funny, it is tempered by the fact that the kid in question has seriously injured another person while attempting a theft. What causes a kid who was well behaved a few months ago, to go on this violent streak? Throughout the DS Logan series , Macrbide keeps doing this macabre dance between being ferociously funny and brutally violent.

Life is as usual for Logan (i.e.) multiple cases to solve, being bullied by Roberta Steel and Insch, trying to slope of work and the bullying. But he has the knack of being involved in anything and everything he tries to avoid. In addition to searching for the delinquent kid, he has to track a serial rapist and a suspicious death which seems related to the S&M industry.

Careful plotting , red herrings and a twist based on something mentioned earlier on in the novel, these are not the strong points of this series. Macbride sets up the various cases/threads of the novel and set Logan running off on his own. The resolution of the novels are a bit too fast, towards the end each case gets solved one by one with a twist that doesn't seem sudden or shocking but as a kind of halfhearted cop-out done just so the novel could end. This could indeed a problem with Macbride's books which run to over 400 pages and in some cases over 500. After reading nearly 3/4ths of these novels, one could feel shortchanged about the ending, which can have an adverse impact on your reading the other works in the series.

All these are overcome by the strengths of the series, which is mainly propelled by the sheer narrative force, the dialogues and the quirky characters.  'Roberta Steel' is still such an engaging character, Insch is true to form, Rennie is suitably slovenly and Richards is a good addition to this weird and funny bunch. As usual Logan hovers on the borderline of being wimpy and reluctant hero. And the dialogues, Macbride just creams this part, the series is worth reading just for them. Beware though, Macbride is not just about dark humor, he can and does dark things to his characters which one cannot just imagine. So you never feel safe with even the main characters of the series because, you never know or rather you know that they can be subjected to unexpected disasters. It is never gratuitous, just Macbride's way of telling us that crap happens and it happens often and at the most unexpected times. This is a compelling series not to be missed if you have the stomach for it.

A heads up for reading the Garnethill Trilogy by Denise Mina

The major issue in reading a crime series is that most of the time, we read it in an order that is different than the one in which they were written. There are multiple reasons, it could be that the order of translation itself is incorrect, or the order in which we get access to the books is wrong, etc. But generally it doesn't cause much confusion other than some seeming inconsistencies in the main protagonists of the series, due to our reading of the series in a different order. The story line of each novel though is mostly self-contained and rarely spills over into the next novels in the series.

It is due to this confidence that I started reading 'Exile' the second novel in Denise Mina's 'Garnethill Trilogy', the first being 'Garnethill'. The confidence was misplaced as the initial parts of the novel tell of events that reveal the main antagonist of the first novel. The writing in this novel is of very high quality,  which isn't surprising for me having read a few of her standalone works, but the revelations about the previous novel (which is perfectly right from the perspective of the main character 'Maureen'.) have kind of put me of the entire series, which is sad, because it is rare to see such powerful writing.

Anyway, heads up to anyone wanting to read the 'Garnethill' trilogy, read them in the order they were published. That's the best way to do it.

Snow White must die - Nele Neuhaus

'Tobias Sartorius' has served 11 years in prison after being convicted of killing 2 girls and has been released as Nele Neuhaus's 'Snow white must die' begins. Though Tobias has always maintained that he is innocent, he also cannot remember anything of the events of the day when he is supposed to have killed the 2 girls. The beginning does remind us of Hakan Nasser's 'The Return' and Tana French's 'In the Woods',  but Neuhaus creates her own path to the murky depths of human behavior.

A mystery set in a small village could be an easy cop-out, just mention that the village is small, that everyone knows everyone, throw a bit of gossip and you have a small town mystery. But right from the prologue Neuhaus gets the setting, tone and mood perfect. The prologue starts of with a disturbing image. It begins as what seems to be a common enough scenario in crime fiction, where someone seems to be imprisoned and the person who has imprisoned the captive has come to see her. He makes sure that the captive has everything that is needed, including playing music etc. But something seems to be wrong, it doesn't seem to be a case of kidnapping and slowly we realize that whoever had been imprisoned is not alive (and has been probably dead for quite a long time) and the person has been taking care of a corpse. Scary. (Having communicated implicitly that the captive is dead, why did Neuhaus have to state it explicitly at the end of the prologue? A bit more confidence in the reader would do writers a whole lot of good).

The setting of Altenhain village, between 2 mountains, with the woods nearby add to the eerie atmosphere. Add to this the mob mentality of the villagers when Tobias returns to his home, the various characters who all seem to be disturbed by his return (unlike a majority of the villagers who just seem to hate having a murderer in their village,  these characters seem to be  personally involved in events of the past), a young man suffering (apparently) from autism who seems to know more than what he lets on, an curious teenager (who is also an outsider) who is interested in the past, you get a novel (and the village in it) waiting to explode.

Nelehaus maintains the narrative tension for the first half well, with multiple scenarios for what could have happened in the past and several suspects for them. Nelehaus is ambitious in the scope of the novel and even if there are too many threads going around, all them are neatly tied with the core of the novel and do make sense. The motivation of each character is pitch perfect, but the manner in which the investigators (and Nelehaus) arrive at it is not. And that's because, she overextends herself,  gets entangled in her own web of threads and is in such a hurry to resolve every doubt that she had sown in the mind of the reader (and the investigators), that the unraveling of the mystery seems more like the unraveling of her narrative skills. There are the obligatory parallel threads of the personnel life of the lead investigators which is functional. In a way, it is actually a good thing because we are not distracted from the core of the novel, but it could also be a deterrent in case of a series (as opposed to in a standalone mystery) when you are not invested into the main protagonists.

The novels works more as a powerful human drama than as a taut mystery. A drama of power, and its abuse in various forms. The cunning manifestation of power masquerading as compassion, the power of sexuality and the sexual jealousy it causes. The drama of families broken apart by a tragic event, the tragic event itself acting as a canvas where the villagers can paint their
pseudo-solicitousness and holier than thou attitude all the while harboring great glee at the opportunity to gossip and badmouth others and reveling in the misfortune of others. The sad state of Tobias's father is one such instance. His once famous restaurant had to be closed due to lack of patronage, his farm had to be mortgaged, house went to seed, got divorced from his wife, he also has to bear the taunts of the villagers. One could argue as to why he should suffer for what his son did and one could rationalize that it was an unfortunate, but unavoidable side-effect of what his son did (or what the villagers thought he did). But towards the end, when one gets to know the truth behind the events,  it is clear that more than righteousness  or moral outrage, it  was the jealousy and spite that the villagers harbored towards the family to Tobias that made them turn against them without any compunction.

This is also about how being a complicit bystander, where one chooses to not do/to ignore/turn the other way,  causes as much heartburn as what one actually does. And it is the power and depth of this human drama, that makes one hope that Neuhaus can provide us more tighter mysteries without compromising on the human core.

P.S
As is the case in the translation of most authors, it looks like Nele Neuhaus's books are being translated out of order. This seems to her 7th book (as per one of her interviews) and it is not clear whether her earlier works were standalone novels or if they too had the detectives  Pia and Oliver in them. Early on in this novel, there is a reference to an earlier investigation. If that investigation is indeed an earlier novel in this series, the reference here could work as a kind of dampener as one of the suspects is mentioned as being not being innocent. However, It must be said that this novel looks (and reads) like the first of a series, so the reference mentioned here may have no major impact.

The Nightmare - Lars Kepler

Penelope and her boyfriend Bjorn are joined at the last minute on their boating trip by Penelope's sister 'Viola'. Viola is murdered and Penelope and her boyfriend are on the run. Meanwhile, an important government official has apparently committed suicide. These two seemingly unrelated incidents start off the husband-wife team 'Lars Kepler's' 'The Nightmare', their follow up to their hugely successful debut novel 'The Hypnotist'.

Like in their first novel, the duo are quite successful in the initial stages of the novel, in creating an atmosphere that reeks of evil and portending of more terrible things to come. Detective Joona gets involved in both the cases and as he investigates links come up between the two, hinting of involvement of people at very high levels. There is also a bit of 'open suspense' in that, the reader knows what happened/is happening to Penelope whereas the police doesn't know it adding a bit more tension to the reader, as he internally wills on Joona to take the correct path. The first part of the novel is the best part as we initially get hit by the full force of evil,  regain our bearings and wait for what will happen next as Joona proceeds with his investigation.

The best of Scandinavian crime fiction/police procedural has always been characterized by a strong sense of geographic atmosphere and of time and place where the events take place. There could be multiple murders occurring, but one would not get the feeling that these are being staged hurriedly by the author just to get a rise out of the reader.  One can sense shift in the genre from police procedural to a more (mainstream) 'American' thriller kind of works in Jo Nesbo's novels. Lars Kepler, too seem to  be following on this route judging from the first 2 books, but with far less control over. Incidents take at seemingly break neck speed, but the reader is left thinking as to how much more suspension of disbelief is required from him. Though it slagged off a bit, 'The Hypnotist' managed the tightrope walk between being a procedural as well as a thriller at the same time, quite well. Though one was left with the feeling, that more depth could have been possible, whatever emotional core was in the novel did create quite a bit of impact, which salvaged the novel overall. But here, the best features of crime fiction (sense of time, place, characters, emotional investment into them) seem to be sacrificed at the altar of thrill. For instance, the main antagonist of the novel is a kind of modern day 'Mephistopheles' who could have been an unforgettable character, but ends being a caricature. There are throwaway lines that hint at his past, his relationship with his son is briefly shown but none of them are dwelt into deeply enough for us to see the protagonist even as a human being, let one as 'Mephistopheles'. Towards the end of the novel, it devolves from a thriller to some kind of action packed novel with raids etc testing our patience.

We get to learn a bit more of Joona in this novel, his commitment phobia (really, is there any other kind of cop, other than Ake Edwardson's Erik Winters who seems to a rare exception), hints of a troubled past and there is even a hint of the supernatural at the end. This emotional involvement with Joona, the prospect to learning more about him, and the fact that Lars Kepler (have so far at-least) invariably do a great job in staging the set up of the novel,  makes one look forward to the other books in the series, though this one is not a worthy sophomore effort.

Alex - Pierre Lemaitre - A stunning entrance to the international crime fiction stage

A police man carrying the burden of a personal tragedy, forced to take up a case that reminds him of the tragedy? Check. A policeman who is confrontational, prickly and impervious to authority? Check. A higher official who seems to have bone to pick with the policeman, trying to bring him down a peg? Check. With such standard templates, Pierre Lemaitre's 'Alex' does not start on a very promising note, but one cannot guess in his wildest imaginations what is going to happen in the course of the novel. 'Alex', a 30 year old women is kidnapped at the beginning of the novel and Camille Verhoeven is assigned the case. Verhoeven's wife was kidnapped and murdered a few years ago and Verhoeven has not yet come to terms with it when this case is assigned to him.

Lemaitre does not unravel the novel with one clue leading to the next, with each opening new doors till we reach the end. No, what he does is more complicated. He solves one problem while creating a new problem for Verhoeven and us reader to mull about. It's not just for Verhoeven or us,the problems created are for Lemaitre too as we think, 'ah, let's see how he gets out of this' and yes, he does get out of it gracefully, exceeding our expectations. It's as if Lemaitre wanted to test himself, by keep setting new roadblocks for himself during the course of the novel and see how he could clear them.   And these are not just small clues or small solutions, but those which completely alter the novels course and how we look at it. It is, as they say in Mumbai tapori lingo 'Ekdum Jhakaas'.

Just as we get used to Lemaitre's  stringing us along and starting feeling a bit complacent, he throws us another googly at the end of the first part. What started off as standard crime fiction, morphs into a thriller which reminds one of 'Anatomy of a Manhunt', 'Anatomy of a Kill'  portions of 'The Day of the Jackal'. No, this is not a spoiler and the novels have nothing similar, it's just that the atmosphere and the tension created reminds one of it. One watches the happenings like he would follow two top players in opposite sides of the draw scything through the opposition, anticipating with fearful excitement the summit clash in the final. Just as we await the final confrontation, Lemaitre throws us another 'doozy'  which leaves us dazed as we lurch into the final part.

What we see in the final part is far more horrifying than the events of the previous parts as we finally understand the motivations of the characters and more than that come face to face with a deviant mind that is so rooted in reality. It leaves us with the sobering thought as to who can be trusted and who is safe in this world.  The manner in which the revelations themselves  occur are a delight though, where Verhoeven and his team work like a spider spinning it's web, waiting for the accused to trip on his own lies and catch him in their net. It just shows that, even with all the technological/scientific advancements,  policing is at it's core about a lot of legwork, painfully gathering evidence, with all the advancements acting as support ,rather than replacing it. Just as we come to turns with the horror unraveled, Lemaitre gives us one final shock, not a 'twist in the tail of the tale' but  'a twist in the twist in the tail of the tale'. It's the only part where I would crib a bit, not because it's not logical (Lot's of clues on this are scattered beforehand, which we understand only now) but that this sort of trick has been handled elsewhere too. Even one of the high priests of crime fiction has done it (mentioning the story/author would be a spoiler though), though it must be said Lemaitre does this trick in a much better manner, without requiring us to to need any suspension of disbelief. Its just that Lemaitre has completely flummoxed at each turn with unique twists, that this final twist seems a bit bland (though in other lesser works, it would be the high point of the entire novel). But it's an ending that does serve a certain purpose and as I write it, in fact it does seem to be the only logical ending, rather than the twist that precedes it. But all the great works in crime fiction, finally we are not left with just a sense of justice happening, but with a sense of loss as we meditate on the events of the past and see how/whether any of this could have been avoided, as there are no final victors when violence is involved.

Throughout the novel, as while as relentlessly hammering us with this twists, Lemaitre pulls no punches in detailing the brutality involved in the present as well as the past. As the past unravels, we understand that this is no gratuitous brutality, described for the sake of shocking readers, but a reaction to the brutality that happened earlier. The entire novel is set in simple present/present continuous tense which is disconcerting, because it's like watching the events unfold right before our eyes and not like listening to a narration by the author. We get the feeling like the author himself is clueless like Veerhoven and the readers as to how things will turn out  (though this is just a trick of the mind) and this is a scary thought when we feel that no one (including the author) knows what is going to happen.

And as befitting a series of novels, the main characters are well etched too. Along with standard criteria that is needed for policemen in such novels (mentioned at the beginning of the post), Verhoeven has also some distinct qualities. For one his height is 4'11. It could just be another way of  Lemaitre differentiating his works from the clutter, or it could also be a homage to the French's greatest general, the 'Le petit caporal' (though there are calls to reconsider the myth about the general's height). Like Napolean, Verhoeven marshals his troops well, has a great relationship with them (in spite of his prickliness) and has their unquestioned loyalty. He has his moments of weakness though, which endears him more to us. His lieutenants, Louis and Armand are also characters one would like to spend time with, particularly the modern day 'Uncle Scrooge', Armand. The relationship between them is woven well into the novel, without intruding on it's core. As the other novels in the series get translated, we should get to know them more.

This is the first novel of Lemaitre to be translated in English and he does make a grand entrance to the international crime fiction stage holding us completely riveted. Just recommending this novel would be an injustice, this is a must read for all crime fiction aficionados. This stunning 'tour de force' is a keeper.

அந்த நாவலின் பெயர், ’லாஸ்ட் பஸ் டு உட்ஸ்டாக் ’(Last Bus to Woodstock).
Sorry about the inconvenience - very sorry indeed. I just had to have a car and your’s was there. Its had a shampoo and I filled the petrol tank - unleaded, like it says in the handbook. Your little car saved my bacon, that’s the truth, and I’m grateful. Please then do me the honour of accepting the enclosed ticket. I know you enjoy opera. I wasn’t sure what performance to choose but Wagner is king for me, and in my opinion ‘Die Valkuire’ is the greatest thing he ever wrote. Enjoy your evening, and thanks again.
When, eleven minutes later, he filled in the four blanks left, in _E_S_I_, he knew he should have been quicker in solving that final clue: ‘Gerry-built semi’- is beginning to collapse in such an upheaval
“…. those aspects of detective work that Morse disliked the most: admin, organization, procedures -with as yet little opportunity for him to indulge in the things he told himself he did the best:hypotheses, imaginings the occasional leap into the semi-darkness”
(The Way Through the Woods)
“He was still working when just over an hour later Morse returned from his lunchtime ration of calories, taken entirely in liquid form.”
“I’ve never said anything significant about motive. Some very fine writers, Phyllis James or Ruth Rendell - their primary concern is to look into the abyss of human consciousness. Good for them; but not for me. For me, it’s the twists and turns of the whodunnit.”
“I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.”
“I always drink at lunchtime. It helps my imagination.”
“There’s always time for one more pint.”
“Don’t worry. I’m the only person in Oxford who gets more sober the more he drinks.”
“How do you manage that?”
“Years of practice. I don’t recommend it, though.”
“According to who, sir?”
“To whom, Lewis - please”
“A lot of people say, ‘I can’t follow the plot, but I like the relationship between Morse and Lewis.’ In that sense, there is a slightly wider dimension.”
‘No!’ thundered Morse. ’I need help - your help, Lewis. For Chrissake get on with it.’
Far from any annoyance, Lewis felt a secret contentment. In only one respect was he unequivocally in a class of his own a police officer, he knew that; for there was only one person with whom the curmudgeonly Morse could ever work with any kind of equanimity - and that was himself, Lewis.
After Lewis had gone, Morse felt very much in tune with the universe. Lewis had forgiven him, readily; and he felt a contentment which he, just as much as Lewis, could ill define and partly comprehend.
‘Good man - Sergeant Dixon - you know,’ said Morse.
Lewis ignored the tribute.
Morse had been pushing his hands one after the other into the pockets of overcoat, jacket, trousers - seemingly without success.
‘You’ll never believe it, Lewis, but…’
‘I think I will sir. Remember what that fellow Diogenes Small wrote about people’s flights of imagination?’
‘You’ve been soaring up there yourself, you mean?’
‘Not quite,no. All I’m saying is it wouldn’t take a detective to see what you are trying to tell me.’
‘Which is?’
‘You haven’t got any money’.
‘Ah.’
Morse looked down silently at the car mat; and Lewis now smiling happily, opened the driving seat door of the Jaguar, and was soon to be seen walking towards the premises of the sub post-office in Kidlington, Oxon.
தொடரைப் படிப்பவர்கள், அனைத்தையும் வெளிவந்த வரிசையில் படிக்கமுடியாவிட்டாலும், முதல் இரண்டு நாவல்களையும் (’Last Bus To Woodstock’, ‘Last Seen Wearing’) இறுதி நாவலையும் (’The Remorseful Day’) மட்டும் வரிசையில் படிப்பது நலம்.

“The person who finds the body is going to be your prime suspect. That’s always been my philosophy. It’s compulsive with these murderers - they want their victim found.”
2. “Often in the past Morse had similarly been six or so furlongs ahead of the field only later to find himself running on the wrong racecourse.”
