 'All Quiet on the Western Front'ம், 'Catch-22'ம் அதன் முக்கியப் பாத்திரங்களின் இருத்தலியல் சிக்கல்களை முன்வைத்தே போர் குறித்த எதிர்மறை  கருத்துக்கள் சுட்டப்படுகின்றன.

"Frankly, I'd like to see the government get out of war altogether and leave the whole field to private industry." "You're inches away from death every time you go on a mission. How much older can you be at your age?"

'The Good Soldier Švejk' நாவலில் மிகப் பெரிய பலமான, 'ஷ்வேக்கின்' யாரையும்/ எதையும் துச்சமென கருதும் போக்கே  (irreverent anarchy),  அதே அலட்சியம் நாவலின் கட்டமைப்பிலும் தெரியும் போது அதன் பலவீனமாகவும் கொள்ளப்பட வாய்ப்புள்ளது.

(Form is non-being and non-being is form) - பாத்திரங்கள் இருந்தாலும், இவர்கள், அந்நாவலின் பாத்திரங்கள் போல் உயிர் கொள்வதில்லை.

  'All Quiet on the Western Front'  நாவலின் இறுதியில் பால் இறக்கிறான். 'The Good Soldier Švejk' நாவல் முற்று பெறாவிட்டாலும்,  போரின் இறுதியில்  ஷ்வேக் எந்த பாதிப்பும் இல்லாமல் மீள்வான் என்பது குறித்து வாசகனுக்கு எந்த சந்தேகமும் இல்லை.

'The Good Soldier Švejk' நாவலுக்கு, பல மொழிபெயர்ப்புக்கள் உள்ள நிலையில் 'Cecil Parrot'ன் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, எந்த சுருக்குதலும் இல்லாத  மூலப் பிரதிக்கு நெருங்கிய ஒன்றாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது.

Something Happened - Joseph Heller - It's Still Happening

Generally when an author makes his debut with a great book, two things happen, the subsequent books of the author are not as good as the first one or even if writes a better book somehow it is always in the shadow of the first one. The second happened to Joseph Heller, with his second novel 'Something Happened',  which to me personally is as good as Catch-22 if slightly better than it.  But which somehow does not seem to have got the same importance of 'Catch-22' or captured people's imagination as the first novel. Told in first person narrative, it is about Slocum a manager level employee at a firm. The book could be split into 3 strands, one about his work life, the other about his family and third about his reminiscences of the past. The novels follows the similar narrative pattern of hysterical realism as in Catch-22, but in a more controlled manner. The novel could in some ways be seen as some of sort mix of the office novel genre and dysfunctional family novel genre and maybe just maybe a coming of age novel with the past of Slocum (though one is not sure if Slocum ever grew up)

As the novel starts Slocum is about to get a promotion, he has a fairly stable family, 2 kids, but he is insecure. Insecure about what? Well, everything in life and that about sum's up Slocum and the novel. Insecure about his professional performance, his marital life, worried about his kids going astray, Slocum seems to be a bundle of nerves and insecurity. How does he face it? Well, for one, he covers his insecurity in the way most other people, being overtly aggressive or overtly sarcastic or trying to be too funny which again ends up like he is insulting others. For instance his dealing with his kids. He fears for them so much, fears that his girl would end up with bad friends, his son may be left alone if he suddenly dies, but is not able to express it clearly and ends up being sarcastic to them, teasing them and generally coming across as a heartless father. The novel in some ways is so well written in the sense that it captures the mindset of a insecure soul pitch perfect. In fact it is so perfect that it could the major problem in the novel, one reason why it is not discussed more. What I am referring here is the prose of the novel, the repetitiveness in the prose with the same thoughts being discussed again and again, it could actually put off the reader as being too incoherent, but wouldn't a mind as troubled and in stress as Slocum be like this? Would he not obsessively keep thinking about the same things. Yes, this novel is not an easy read, but when you think of Slocum's mindset and try to relate it to the prose, then I feel that the reader may appreciate and understand it better.

In the office, Slocum spends most of the time worrying about getting fired, though as he himself says, he works well, meets his targets, gets his bonuses regularly and is generally seen as a solid employee. But why this fear of getting fired, why this insecurity, what happened to him? You never get to know that. The office parts of the novel are the ones that are hilarious, professional jealousies, backbiting, people trying to climb the corporate ladder, while pulling the others down. Other the other hand we also see people at very high level positions who spend their time doing nothing worthwhile, while driving those below them like slaves, hoping that the work will be get done by their sub-ordinates. Official conferences, which is just an opportunity for the big shots to get wasted are described in laugh out loud manner. We get an understanding of how a huge monolithic organization manages to work, how some how things get done, though when you look at the actions of the employees it's almost as if they don't care about anything. The organization could be seen as a machine whose path has been chartered a long time ago and which humming alone nicely, irrespective to the individual merits/demerits of the employees.

In Slocum's past we see a young man (boy really), just out from the war, working in a small position at an office, trying to reconcile the madness of the war that he saw with the (so called) normal social life. His major concern is to have an affair with a co-worker, which does not come to fruit, in spite of his trying. You cannot read into it, as a youngsters normal impulse alone. There seems to be something deeper in the office and the workers that has remained with Slocum. Maybe that's why he keeps calling up the old office's number and makes crank inquiries about the old employees.

This is a tough novel in some parts, but well worth it. Along with Catch-22 (http://wordsbeyondborders.blogspot.com/2011/01/catch-22-subversive-look-at-war.html), this is the masterpiece of Heller. If Catch-22 was about a person trying to make sense of the madness of war, this novel is about a person trying to make sense of the madness of normal life. Slocum is not a likable, person by any means, but his  but that's what makes him so close to us. In that sense Slocum seems to be a more fresh and blood kind of man to whom most of us can relate to than Yossarian  of Catch 22. (Of course, that's not Heller's mistake, how many of us have any first hand experience of the horrors of war, but most of us would have had some of the experiences of Slocum).

The novel has it's resonance even today, in the sense how many of us don't suffer from some sort of boredom, ennui even if it is in minor level in the work we do, in our day to day humdrum existence. Don't many of us yearn for some break from it, but are caged to our daily existence due to various factors like family, money, comfort or sheer plain  indolence in breaking from our chains. Do we not, at many times, suppress our professional fears and get on with the job as if nothing is wrong. Are we not scared about the permanence of our jobs at some point or other, particularly in these times of faster cycles of recession?  Looking at the novel and current life, nothing actually seems to have changed for the so called 'Modern Man' the last 30-40 years, since the novel was first published.  The question of what happened in Slocum's life that made him the man he is right now, could also be asked of anyone of us, but as in the novel, I am not sure if we could answer that clearly.

Catch 22 - A Subversive Look At War

What is the general impression that prevails on war?. It raises patriotic, even jingoistic feelings, people feel proud and sad at the same time about the young men who give up their lives in it. This has been propagated through books and other forms of media. But there have been several writers who have taken a different view to this and shown the other side of it. These are not some neo-liberals, who were sitting at home and pontificated about non-violence and other stuff. These were men who were part of the first/second world wars and distilled their experiences in the form of books. Some wrote it as an intense and gritty work, like Erich Maria Remarque and James Jones, some wrote as a mismash of sci-fi and real life horror like kurt vonnegut. And there is Joseph Heller, who wrote 'Catch 22', a monstrously insane work that looks at the horrors of war with huge amounts of black humor. This is a novel which is morbidly funny, terrifying and sad at the same time. Joseph Heller too was part of a airborne bomb squad in the second world war.

The novel is set in world war II, in its later stages when the allies were closing in on the victory. It follows the experiences of a fictional army unit set in Italy. The novel may be bit repetitive for some, since it shows the same event happening from different points of view, but each repetition of the event gives some additional information about it and therefore acts as one stop closer to understanding it. So random events that occur initially, would make more sense as you read through the novel.

There are lots of characters in the novel who experiences form the bulk of the novel. The main one is 'Yossarian'. Yossaraian is a young man whose main objective is to stay alive at any cost. He is only 28, but feels like he is an old man because everyone is trying to kill him and he may be dead at any time. So if he could be dead at any time, it must mean that he is old. Seems weird, even funny right? Well, this the brand of morbid humor that permeates through this novel. You smile at this line, then you stop, when you think about this 28 year old guy who must be so scared that he says a corny thing like this. The novel is full of such situations where you start laughing, then stop it as the impact of the dark humor hits you. The novel has several such unforgettable characters. The character 'Doc Daneeka' is one, whose fate shows the bureaucratic bull shit that exists in all organisations. What happens to him?  All unit men are bound to fly for a certain amount of time as per rules, but Daneeka arranges things such that he does not fly, but his name is in the log book. But sadly for him, the plane he is supposed to be flying in crashes and he is marked as dead. Even though he is alive and visible to everyone, he is still treated as dead by the bureaucracy. His wife is sent a letter stating about his death and she too accepts it. He cannot leave the unit since he is dead and a dead man cannot be given permission to go out. The whole farce climaxes when Doc Daneeka starts getting convinced that perhaps he is indeed dead since the authorities say so. The  ultimate absurdity.

Heller also satirizes the business side of war through Milo MinderBinder. He is the mess officer and a true servant of capitalism. He is the true business man who will provide supplies for both the allies and axis, in-fact he opens a separate line of communication between them and gets rights to go anywhere in the war zone for his business activities. He is not bound to anyone, but his own business and the process of making money. His famous saying by which he justifies what he does is "What's good for Milo Minderbinder, is good for the country". Milo could a satirical metaphor for the global villager and the concept of the global village which has come up in recent times.

The most poignant character among them would be 'Major Major Major Major'. Yes this is his name, his father gave him such a name a joke. Well he was doomed from the beginning. Due to this crazy name, he gets promoted very quickly due to some quirk in the computer which mistakes his name for an actual rank. Now he cannot be demoted. So his colleagues and superiors hate him for becoming their equal without doing anything, while he subordinates hate him for outranking them so quickly. He is isolated and no one wants him. Once he decides to participate in a basket ball game in disguise. But his subordinates identify him, but without letting him know about it, they allow him to join and beat him up in the guise of playing the game and thus satisfying their anger against him. This character stops coming in the middle of the book, but is a most poignant one. It also serves to show the cliques/group-ism existing in the army as in every other organisation.

This crazy novel ends with Yossarian deserting the army and paddling away to his escape. One hopes that he made his escape. (Infact Yossarian comes back in one of Heller's later novels, 'Closing Time', but that's for another post). By now you would have got an idea of the themes and the morbid humor in this novel. The novel has been criticized heavily for trivializing the sacrifices of the soldiers, showing them as cowards and being unpatriotic. This could not be further from the truth. In fact this novel looks at the young men who were plucked from their normal lives and plunged into a hell of which they had not idea of how to survive and treats them with the utmost compassion. Neither does it have any overt anti-war propaganda, but through the lives of these young men subverts the concept of war. If anything, the novel would be offensive to the arm-chair theoreticians and nationalists who equate patriotism with people dying for their country, and I am pretty sure that most of these same people would  hesitate to give up their little finger for their country.

If you still find this novel offensive, request you to just think about this. How was your life when you were/are in your early and late twenties. Yes, you would have faced a lot of problems, but how many of us were/are in a situation where we were trying to avoid the next bullet/bomb that could send us to oblivion. How many of us are/were in a situation where we don't know if we would be alive the next hour let alone the next day. Not many I guess. These things are still happening around the world and most of us lucky enough to not been affected by this. Think about the young men who have to confront something which is completely beyond their comprehension. Their reactions to it may make some sense now. You may still dislike the novel, but you would certainly look at it in a different life.

For those, who liked the sound of this post and the novel, read the book. It's a masterpiece.
